Sumner County delays decision on $650,000 volunteer fire appropriation, asks ad‑hoc to study options

Sumner County commissioners on Tuesday debated whether to approve a proposed $650,000 one‑time appropriation to support volunteer fire departments and ultimately voted to defer the measure for further study.

Chair (name not specified) moved to approve the $650,000 request and added an amendment making approval contingent on the commission asking the state to allow a fire‑tax referendum. “I want them to be fully informed about what it is that they're getting, what it is that it's costing them,” the chair said, explaining he would support a referendum and then vote based on the public’s response.
