Sumner County approves $724,685 for state-spec courtroom build on 5th Floor

Sumner County commissioners approved a capital expenditure of $724,685.13 to build out a state-spec courtroom on the 5th Floor of the county courthouse.

Staff presented a breakdown that listed $59,685 for construction costs, approximately $15,000 in contingency and the balance for electronics and courtroom furniture, together totaling $724,685.13. Commissioners discussed lower-cost alternatives such as adapting an existing first-floor jury assembly room, but staff said floor-specific state server and security requirements for the 5th Floor courtroom made that option infeasible for the state-level courtroom specifications.

Some commissioners questioned whether existing, underused courtrooms could be scheduled more efficiently or whether a furniture-only solution (estimated in discussion at roughly $50,000) could meet near-term needs; several commissioners said the judge in question needs a full-time courtroom now and that delaying the work likely would raise future costs due to construction inflation.

After discussion, and with suspension of rules to expedite, the commission voted to approve the capital expenditure and move forward with procurement and construction under the presented specifications.

County staff were directed to return with final vendor contract documents and to identify any opportunities to reduce nonessential line items if possible.
