The Burke County Public School System board adopted a proclamation recognizing September 2025 as Attendance Awareness Month and received a detailed attendance update from central office staff.
The proclamation, read and approved by the board, commits the district to reducing chronic absenteeism through prevention, early intervention, family engagement and community partnerships. The board resolution states the district will focus on identifying barriers to attendance and using data to guide intervention.
Central office leaders delivered school-by-school attendance comparisons showing declines since last year at some schools and summarized 188 classroom observations conducted with tools similar to those Cognia will use during the accreditation review. The central office noted stronger expectations and student engagement in many classrooms but flagged growth areas, including digital learning skills and continued attention to rigor. Administrators described an early-graduation approval process (GPA threshold and multiple sign-offs) and provided updates on facilities work at the high school, including delayed lighting deliveries for the media center and ongoing auditorium seat installation.
Board members thanked staff for the outreach and asked for continued monitoring ahead of Cognia's visit.
Next steps: Staff will review town-hall feedback, continue attendance interventions, and report back on progress and facilities deliveries.
