Board approves single construction-manager bid for Birkin High reroof and accepts Life Center plans
Summary
Board members approved a single construction-manager-at-risk bid (8% fee quoted) for Birkin High School’s reroof after staff reported only one bidder. The board also accepted the final footprint for the Burke County Life Center and approved a January start for abatement/demo and a temporary relocation plan.
The Burke County Board of Education approved two construction-related decisions at its Oct. 21 meeting: staff recommended and the board approved accepting a single construction-manager-at-risk bid for the Birkin High School reroof, and the board accepted the proposed footprint for the Burke County Life Center.
Facilities staff told the board that only one construction-manager bid was received for the Birkin High reroof solicitation and that the fee quoted was 8% of the project’s total construction cost. Staff recommended approving the single and low bid with the understanding the construction manager will help solicit competitive trade bids and work with district staff to reduce costs. A board member moved to approve the single bid and the motion carried by show of hands.
On the Burke County Life Center, staff presented a final draft footprint that includes a technology area separated from the life-center spaces, a cafeteria equipped with warmers and chillers but not a full commercial kitchen, and secure access controls for after-hours functions. Staff said abatement and demolition work could start in January and outlined a temporary relocation plan for students to occupy a recently renovated wing at the middle school while work proceeds.
A motion to accept the Life Center plans was made and approved. Board members asked staff to ensure construction will not interfere with instructional time and requested continued updates as the project advances.
