Klamath County commissioners OK $10,000 ARPA diversion for holiday food assistance

The Klamath County Board of Commissioners voted to divert $10,000 in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds toward holiday food assistance during its Nov. 12, 2025 human-resources meeting.
Commissioner Kelly Minty proposed redirecting $10,000 that had been tentatively earmarked for Developmental Disabilities (DD) services to purchase holiday turkeys and support local food distributions, describing it as a morale boost for service members and a way to help local pantries and missions. "I would like to propose to the board that we divert, $10,000," Minty said.
A commissioner who had spoken with the DD Services director said many DD clients already receive SNAP benefits and that the food bank is preparing holiday baskets, so the previously appropriated dollars may not be as necessary as initially thought. That commissioner suggested the board could revisit the ARPA balance in December if needed.
Discussion included logistics and options: a transcribed vendor name 'Sherms' was cited as having roughly 800 turkeys on hand at about $25 each and a suggestion was raised to buy about 300 turkeys for distribution. Commissioners also discussed alternatives to whole turkeys — including $150 Safeway gift cards — to avoid waste if demand is uncertain.
A motion to divert $10,000 to holiday food assistance was made and seconded; at least two commissioners were audibly recorded voting "aye" and the chair declared the motion passed. The chair said the board would revisit the ARPA allocations in December. The meeting was then adjourned.
