The Verona Common Council approved a three‑year collective bargaining agreement with the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 311, covering 2026 through 2028.
Alder Helmke said staff and union representatives reached a tentative agreement that includes a new acting‑officer stipend, parity in some holiday and personnel days, vacation changes to align with battalion chiefs, an increase in the uniform allowance from $400 to $500 annually, and wage increases of 8% in 2026, 6% in 2027 and 2% in 2028. The personnel committee and staff recommended approval and the council voted to adopt the agreement unanimously.
Alder Helmke characterized the agreement as a “win‑win” that avoided arbitration and corrected prior differences in compensation treatment. The contract aims to retain and attract qualified staff while aligning firefighter compensation with the broader compensation study adopted for non‑represented employees.
