Developer temporarily withdraws Main Street Station proposal; neighbors raise density and vacancy concerns

Fiduciary Real Estate Development announced during public comment that it has asked city staff to temporarily withdraw applications for the Main Street Station project (sometimes referred to as the Backus property) while the developer meets neighbors and interested alders.
Steve Bursell, president of Fiduciary, said the company is local to the Madison/Milwaukee area and asked the council and neighbors to review their properties and contact leaders to ask about Fiduciary’s track record. “We will be talking with neighbors and alders about our project and look forward to discussing further with you all in the not too distant future,” Bursell said.
Several nearby residents, including Scott Seid, opposed another apartment complex on the Backus site as inconsistent with the comprehensive plan and raised market concerns. Seid cited local reporting showing county vacancy rates rising and said Fiduciary’s proposed building could sit roughly 90 feet from his backyard line, comparing the distance to the Lincoln Street Apartments to illustrate the scale.
Councilmembers took the comments under advisement and staff and the developer said they would continue neighborhood outreach before the proposal returns for formal review.
