Amanda of the Community Agriculture & Sustainability division told the Recreation Commission the division is actively fundraising to raise $650,000 to convert the Old Rucker brick house into a community center.

"We are working on a fundraising campaign. Right now, we're actively fundraising, looking to raise a total of $650,000 to transform the old brick house that's at Old Rucker into the community center," Amanda said. She told commissioners the campaign is almost halfway to goal and includes grassroots partner days (for example, local restaurants donating 10% of a day’s sales). Amanda said one recent pizza‑shop fundraiser brought in about $100 and, more important, raised awareness.

Operational details: the division has 36 community garden plots (renewals opened Nov. 14; general public Nov. 21) and a wait list of 34; greenhouse contractor work is expected to finish this week and electricians will install 21 four‑plug outlets so the greenhouse can be used in January. Amanda also said rows 7–13 in Quad A will be dedicated in 2026 to clients of North Fulton Community Charities so that pantry clients can grow food for themselves; the farm historically donates about 95% of harvest to the pantry.

Timeline: Amanda said architectural renderings are approved by community development and the fundraising campaign targets a stop in May so construction could start and be completed before Rucker Park construction begins in September. On utilities, Amanda said the existing septic system at the Old Rucker house is capable of supporting a public restroom and that the park renovation will include a separate restroom on a separate septic system nearer the parking area.

The farm also received an Atlanta Regional Commission "great place" award for innovative public space, a regional recognition Amanda said the staff will present to mayor and council on Dec. 8.

Next steps: staff will continue fundraising campaigns, pursue construction timing aligned with Rucker Park schedule, and report progress to the commission and mayor and council.
