Gonzales council hears youth-council updates, transportation committee notes, odor complaints and interest in camera system

Council received several brief updates and announcements covering youth programs, regional transportation planning, local recycling authority staffing and community concerns.

The Gonzales Youth Council reported ongoing work on a community project, a community-center tour and dates for events including an Interact conference on Nov. 8 and a Nov. 13 meeting to finalize SMART goals.

Committee reports flagged three county transportation priorities: Highway 68 signal synchronization (Caltrans), 101 corridor improvements including an overpass proposal near Chular, and a potential train-stop study in Pajaro. Committee members also discussed locating TAMSE staff offices and possible capital costs for meeting space.

Lee's Valley Recycles said it will interview candidates for a new general manager on Nov. 14; the authority's next regular meeting is Nov. 20.

Several council members and staff discussed continuing odor complaints in Gonzales. A councilmember said county environmental-health staff suggested residents call a direct contact when they smell odors; staff said environmental health would be asked to investigate and that the city would encourage residents to report incidents.

The city manager said a county supervisor had expressed interest in helping fund a Flock license-plate-reader camera system for city entrances; council asked for cost details before any commitment. Staff also said the local PG&E government-affairs representative, Jasmine Venegas, will attend the next council meeting to update on reconductoring work and that the city will ask for a written schedule.

The fire department reported a new engine entered service and has responded to calls with no problems.

The meeting closed with a moment of silence for two community members and an adjournment.
