Planning staff announces comp‑plan roadshow, free development seminar and Citizens Academy

Deputy Director Kellner told the commission the department distributed flyers and will host a series of comprehensive plan open houses next week in multiple locations, describing the schedule as a "roadshow" intended to reach varied parts of the community. Kellner asked commissioners to spread the word and noted one noon‑hour session on Thursday will be virtual and recorded for those who cannot attend in person.

Kellner also highlighted a free incremental development seminar (organized by the Incremental Development Alliance and local partners) aimed at people interested in small‑scale residential development such as adding accessory units; the department will participate in the afternoon session highlighting real‑world examples. Kellner encouraged advance registration because space is limited.

Staff additionally reported the Fairbanks Citizens Academy is underway with about 25 participants learning about borough operations; community planning and emergency operations will present to the class the next day. Kellner said the planning commission will move to a one‑meeting‑per‑month winter schedule, with the November meeting on Nov. 18 and a December meeting scheduled for Dec. 16. Finally, Kellner noted the Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) update is underway and requested a work session with FAST Planning staff to brief commissioners.
