ZBA seeks lead agency for environmental review of 581 Sawmill River Road reconstruction

Attorney Andrew Romano said the plans largely mirror earlier approvals and that an updated survey reduced the number of fit‑on parking spaces to 19 (two more than zoning requires). The board noted earlier history: a 2012 fire at the site that community members recalled as depositing paint into the Saw Mill River. Several board members asked planning staff and the legal department to research whether additional environmental requirements or safeguards are warranted.
The board adopted a motion that the ZBA assume lead agency status for this unlisted action and directed the planning department to initiate the coordinated review. The applicant acknowledged outstanding engineering comments and said they will submit any requested traffic or site studies.
The board emphasized that any environmental concerns raised by residents or historical incidents should be investigated by staff and reported back prior to final action.
