Parks & Rec names permanent senior coordinator as programs move locations

Brian Charlton, Fairbanks North Star Borough recreation superintendent, used the commission’s Oct. 6 meeting to outline recent changes and upcoming events in senior recreation programming.

Charlton said the senior recreation program is in transition following a move from the Joy facility to multiple locations; staff and adaptive‑program personnel relocated into new offices and equipment is being reorganized. He reported the Sept. Adopt‑a‑Plant event, held with the senior center and ADRC, drew more than 160 participants. ‘‘Chris was selected as our new permanent staff,’’ Charlton said of the interim senior program coordinator, adding that participants reacted positively and staff plan expanded fitness and social offerings in coming months.

Charlton announced MarySci will reopen the week of Oct. 20 and the department will celebrate with a potluck. Because of continuing lifeguard shortages, pool hours will be limited (staff cited hours of roughly 10 a.m.–2 p.m.), although building access will be extended to 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Facility supervisor Christine Worth will coordinate early‑morning exercise and ensure shower and weight‑room access during expanded hours.

Charlton also flagged senior recognition planning for next May and said the department’s cost for that event runs “well over $20,000,” prompting commissioners to discuss sponsorships and fundraising. The commission agreed to explore sponsorship and grant possibilities and to coordinate with borough clerks and staff about any regulatory limits on sponsorships.

Charlton concluded his report by thanking staff and volunteers and inviting commissioners to the reopening potluck.
