The Brownsburg Police Commission on Nov. 12 approved internal staffing and continued a recruitment push after Chief Joe Grimes outlined promotions and hiring plans.
Grimes announced that Sergeant Doug Abshire has been selected as the department's training coordinator and said Captain Jeff Klayer and Sergeant Joe Fults will assist in cross‑training plans. "I just wanna thank Chief Grimes for this opportunity," Abshire said from the meeting room.
On promotions, Grimes said three sergeant candidates and ten corporal candidates completed essay phases; board review of essays is underway and interviews are scheduled for the 14th and 17th, with promotion requests expected at the commission's December or January meeting.
On hiring, Grimes reported 132 non‑experienced candidates submitted pre‑applications and 27 lateral (certified) applicants; he noted that applicants commonly fall out during screening and that written and physical testing for non‑experienced candidates is scheduled for Nov. 22 at a middle school site.
Grimes also reported that Officer Morgan Etburger completed field training and moved to the PM shift effective Oct. 22.
Commissioners did not alter hiring policy at the meeting but asked for continued updates as testing and candidate counts are finalized.
