Student and board back evidence-based prevention language; Neola policy updates approved

A Mentor High School student told the Mentor Exempted Village Board of Education on Nov. 11 that the district should require evidence-based sexual-assault prevention and suicide-awareness programs, criticizing a recent school presentation as unprofessional and ineffective.

"Students deserve better. We deserve safety, integrity, and evidence based action," Zoe Barringer said during the agenda-only public-comment period, urging the board to keep and strengthen the district's evidence-based requirement in proposed policy 8462.

Board business that followed included a second reading and board approval of updated Neola policies. At least one board member publicly thanked staff for restoring language that requires prevention programs to be evidence based.

The student speaker also raised broader concerns about how the district handled a recent serious student-safety incident and criticized the use of an outside presenter she described as unprofessional. The board did not alter the policies further at the meeting; members said the evidence-based wording had been reintroduced.

What happens next: the district will implement the updated Neola policies with evidence-based language and provide the community with continuing updates on program selections and parent outreach, including an upcoming free parent session on internet and social-media safety.
