Broadview principal tells board school aims to 'grow the whole child' with PBIS and restored programs

Broadview Middle School’s leadership presented the school’s priorities to the Danbury Board of Education, emphasizing social‑emotional learning, restorative practices, and ambitious academic growth targets.

The principal (presented during the board’s Spotlight segment) said staff are focusing on the "whole child" academically, socially and emotionally. The school reported reductions in behavior referrals, use of PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) and restorative practices, and plans for instructional leadership teams to conduct learning walks and gather classroom data. The principal said teachers are using data to plan instruction and aim to increase the share of students meeting or exceeding typical growth on the I‑Ready assessment to 70 percent by December.

The presentation also highlighted extracurricular and community activities that extend learning, including an ESL after‑school camp, mentorship with Western Connecticut State University’s Excel program, intramural sports, art and robotics clubs, and family engagement events (multicultural night, Veterans Day breakfast). The principal framed these programs as part of a strategy to build trust and student leadership.
