Emerson students, volunteers and parents recognized as teachers and parents describe school supports

The CUSD 200 board meeting opened with a welcome from Emerson Elementary School and brief presentations by students, followed by community recognitions and several public comments.
Katie De La Rosa, principal of Emerson Elementary, introduced a group of students who described school traditions — monthly assemblies, Emerson family groups, recess-buddy mentoring, and after-school clubs — and closed by wishing the board a happy Thanksgiving. De La Rosa then presented a community-partner recognition to Vanessa O'Brien for more than 20 years of volunteer service as a lunch and recess supervisor, Camp Kinder supporter and occasional long-term substitute.
In public comment, first-grade teacher Amanda Dudgeon described Emerson staff and family initiatives that helped students re-engage with school and noted that an Emerson Food Pantry organized by parents served 17 families in its first week. Parent Tara Anne Robertson described her autistic son’s positive experience and thanked teachers, aides and administrators for creating a space of belonging. Veteran Tom Aiello urged consistent flag prominence in classrooms as a unifying civic practice; Michael Lofito asked the board to consider a formal American-flag-etiquette policy requiring the American flag be largest and most prominent when multiple flags are displayed.
The board thanked those who spoke and moved on to the evening’s business.
