Third-grader tells Nelson County board: give older students recess and stop homework

Abigail Martin, introduced by staff as a third-grader at Cox's Creek, addressed the Nelson County Board of Education during public comment on Nov. 11. She told the board that middle and high school students should have recess because their school days are long and they spend much of the day on Chromebooks.
"Homework is just terrible," Abigail said, arguing that students already spend many hours in school and should not have additional work at home. Abigail also suggested that students might benefit from time to talk with family or pursue other activities after school.
Board members thanked Abigail for speaking and praised the bravery of presenting to the board. One board member asked Abigail to "tell your friends" to speak at future meetings.
The board did not take action on Abigail—s suggestions at the meeting; the remarks were recorded as public comment for consideration as the district continues calendar and scheduling discussions.
