Mr. Martin told the Nelson County Board of Education that the district—s construction team is closing exteriors and shifting attention to interior work at the up center and bus garage, that the construction trailer and mobilization are imminent for the Thomas Nelson middle-school addition, and that a groundbreaking is scheduled for Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Nelson County High School and the New Haven project are in design stages; staff said design concepts tailored to teacher programming and pathways will be shared with the board in December. The district is meeting weekly with architects and construction managers to move designs forward.
The board also received an update from the calendar committee. The committee plans to meet again on Dec. 9 and present a calendar for potential adoption on Dec. 16. The draft dates call for teachers to start in early August and students to begin Aug. 12, with the school year ending before Memorial Day (May 31) under the current draft. Committee members flagged how to use 12 staff workdays, community table days and how snow or flood makeup days can affect scheduling. Board discussion focused on whether virtual days should be used as makeup days and on preserving useful staff workdays for family engagement.
Board members raised concerns at Cox's Creek, a major transportation hub, about student exposure to weather while waiting for buses. district staff said the maximum observed wait time during a study was eight minutes, with most students waiting about five. Covered walkways and long-term site planning for Cox's Creek were identified as priorities as the district moves toward a 6-12 model and reconfigured transportation hubs.
Board members encouraged staff to continue study and present options for covered walkways and long-term site use as part of upcoming facilities planning.
