The Kearney City Council on Wednesday presented a proclamation honoring Buck Mahoney for 41 years of sports reporting at the Kearney Hub and his inductions into the UNK Sports Hall of Fame and the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame. Mayor Nicola read the proclamation recognizing Mahoney’s career and asked him to reflect on his time covering Kearney-area athletics.
Mahoney told the council, "It's been a fun 41 years. I've enjoyed almost all of it," and traced the biggest changes he has seen to a steady expansion of sports — including the arrival of hockey, girls wrestling and high school soccer — and to changes in how results are shared with the public. "The other big thing is internet, social media," he said, noting those platforms have both simplified and complicated local coverage.
The proclamation highlighted Mahoney’s role covering Kearney High, Kearney Catholic and the University of Nebraska at Kearney, saying his reporting helped preserve the community’s athletic history. Council members and residents applauded his long service and joined Mahoney for a photo with the proclamation. The council then moved on to the evening’s regular agenda.
