Residents, alumni and the Coconut Creek High booster club told the Broward County School Board the school's facilities are unsafe and overdue for capital investment, asking the board to prioritize the campus in upcoming capital planning and SMART bond allocations.
Coconut Creek High School community members implored the Broward County School Board on Nov. 12 to prioritize their campus for capital renewal and modernization, describing leaking ceilings, broken restrooms and classrooms in poor condition.
Naija Maldonado, representing Coconut Creek High, said the school serves students from Coconut Creek, Margate, North Lauderdale and Pompano and urged the board to add the school to the next round of capital programs in the district’s JJ/Capital list. ‘‘Every child deserves to learn in a space that is safe, clean and inspiring,’’ she said.
Superintendent Howard Hepburn responded that the district has been finalizing a facilities condition assessment and master plan that will identify needs across the system and guide prioritization. Board members asked staff to follow up with the Coconut Creek community and provide information on feasibility and planning for a potential modernization project.
Facilities staff said the SMART Bond program and the district’s capital master plan identify and sequence major projects; smaller capital amendments currently before the board cover close-outs and retainage releases for completed projects but do not yet list Coconut Creek High.
What’s next: Board members asked the superintendent to have staff meet with Booster Club leaders to share project plans and to add Coconut Creek High to feasibility studies for the upcoming budget cycle and capital program discussions.
