Council delays rezoning at 500 Day Street after developer requests more time

The council on Nov. 11 held a request to rezone property at 500 Day Street and to extend a related planned unit development (PUD) after a developer asked for more time to finalize tenant and parcel details.
Chester McDonald said his group is negotiating with Georgia Pacific on redevelopment and asked the council to extend the PUD for an additional 30 days to finish site‑line language and bring prospective tenants to the table. Councilors probed how many meetings had occurred with city staff since the item was first held and whether deviations to parcel lines were still intended.
Alder Proffitt said he favored adopting the rezoning that night given the city’s updated comprehensive plan; other alders, including Alder Johnson and Alder Eck, supported the short hold so staff and the developer could work through technical language and tenant fit. The council approved a motion to hold the item to Dec. 16 by voice vote (Alder Proffitt recorded a nay on the hold). The council also received the RDA report with the exception of the related PUD item.
What happens next: Staff and the developer will pursue additional meetings with prospective tenants and clarify PUD language. The rezoning will return to the council on Dec. 16 for further consideration and possible final action.
