The Flint Community Schools board approved a first amendment to the district CFO’s contract on Nov. 18, extending the contract through March 31 to provide overlap for audit completion and to support a potential transition to a new CFO.

Superintendent Jones urged the extension to avoid loss of institutional knowledge and to allow time for a new hire to learn district financial systems. “I would not want them to learn that from the individuals that are under the CFO,” Jones said, arguing for a longer overlap to ensure continuity.

Several trustees raised concerns about the CFO’s performance and the timing of the extension. One trustee alleged that some employee payments were delayed and said, “Their checks bounced,” during the discussion; other trustees pushed back, noting improvements and corrective actions and urging caution about language that could suggest the district is in financial distress.

After discussion — including whether a month-to-month contract would suffice — the board approved the amendment by roll-call vote, 6–1. The president and several trustees emphasized the extension is revocable and that the board can end the contract earlier if needed.

What happens next: the amended contract will remain in place through March 31 unless the board chooses to end it sooner; trustees asked for the auditor’s report and additional oversight information.
