State to fund nearly $577,000 for local traffic‑mitigation work tied to I‑94 project

Scott Reinbacher of DPW said the state will pay the city "almost $577,000" to change signal timing at key intersections, install communications and emergency vehicle preemption equipment, and add beacons at school locations expected to be affected by diversion. He said recent temporary lane closures and the state's forecasts showed diversion as high as 30% onto certain local streets and argued the city should plan mitigation now.
Several aldermen pressed on whether mitigation is premature without empirical data on long‑term diversion and whether the state is also funding additional bus service. Reinbacher said the city coordinates with Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) but did not know whether the state has provided additional operating funds for bus service. The committee moved adoption without objection.
