At the Municipal Court of Providence, judges dismissed several traffic and parking citations after hearing that defendants were elderly veterans or were seeking medical treatment at VA facilities.
In one exchange the judge noted a defendant's long record and advanced age, saying the court would not pursue the matter further after hearing of the defendant's service: "Based on your contributions to this country ... we're not going to, go any further with this ... This case is dismissed." The defendant thanked the court.
Another case involved a Vietnam veteran who acknowledged parking illegally at the VA but pleaded guilty with an explanation, calling the VA parking "atrocious." The judge said he was balancing the city's enforcement policy against the veteran's need for medical treatment and dismissed the $100 ticket.
In both instances the judge cited the defendants' military service and medical needs as factors in the decision to dismiss the citations. Video evidence of a red-light crossing was viewed in court in one case, but the judge exercised discretion in light of the defendant's service and age.
These were bench dispositions announced from the judge's bench; no roll-call votes or formal multi-member body actions were recorded in the clips.
