Shenandoah County school board recommends revocation of a teacher's license

The Shenandoah County School Board voted on Nov. 12 to recommend revocation of the teaching license for an employee identified during a closed-session hearing. Board member Mister Ricker moved that the board recommend revocation and direct the division superintendent to forward the board’s recommendation, the petition, the hearing record and supporting documentation to the Superintendent of Public Instruction under applicable licensure regulation; Mister Vance seconded the motion.

During roll call, Mister Street recorded an abstention; Miss Carlinia, Mister Gutshall, Mister Vayats and Mister Ricker voted yes. The board chair announced the motion passed with four yes votes and one abstention. The board had convened a closed session earlier under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act to discuss personnel matters and the petition for revocation.

The motion instructs the superintendent to transmit the petition and hearing record to state officials for any further action under the Virginia Board of Education’s licensure regulations. The board’s public record does not disclose additional details about the employee or the grounds cited in the closed-session record; the agenda item referred to the person as “teacher A.”

Because the board acted by making a recommendation to the state licensing authority rather than imposing an on-the-spot sanction, further proceedings and any final licensure decision will be handled by the Virginia Department of Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

The board included its closed-session certification on the public record immediately after reconvening in open session, with each member stating “I so certify.” The board did not take additional public action on the item during the meeting.
