Traffic study finds signal warrants not met at Greenview/6 Mile; county to pursue enforcement and short-term fixes

A traffic-signal warrant analysis presented to the Wayne County Public Services Committee concluded that a traffic signal is not currently warranted at Greenview and 6 Mile (West McNichols), and staff recommended short-term measures instead of signal installation.
Pete Milankovich, a senior licensed professional engineer in Wayne County’s traffic department, told the committee that the study looked at the last 10 years of accident history and measured traffic volumes. He said the site recorded about 40 accidents since 2015, averaging roughly 3–5 per year, and that neither volume nor accident warrants for a new signal were met. Milankovich emphasized that many crashes were linked to driver or pedestrian behavior and that several serious incidents (including a motorcycle fatality at Otter Drive) would not be solved by a signal.
His recommended near-term responses included trimming trees that obscure signs, deploying radar-feedback speed trailers to give drivers real-time speed information, and coordinating targeted enforcement with the sheriff’s office or Detroit Police. For longer-term options, staff described a potential lane-diet study (removing or reconfiguring travel lanes) but said such work would require a comprehensive study because of high traffic volumes and potential parking impacts for adjacent businesses.
Commissioners pressed staff on timeline and monitoring: staff said they monitor intersections continuously and will return with a report on signal timing and any recommended enforcement or trailer purchases. The committee accepted the presentation and forwarded agenda items to the full Board.
