At its meeting the Hermosa Beach City School District board approved several action items brought by staff.
Appointments: The board approved the appointment of four members to the Measure HV citizens oversight committee — Peter Spragg, Thomas Dunbabin, Sasha Hex and Michael Mancuso — with staff recommending the slate and the board voting in favor.
Facilities: The board accepted the notice of completion for the Hermosa Valley HVAC replacement project. District staff and RHA commissioning consultants inspected the project and found it complete; staff said accepting the notice allows final payments to be issued.
Technology procurement: The board approved a technology contract to purchase Apple iPads for teachers in kindergarten through second grade and for special education use to support the administration of DIBELS and the Woodcock-Johnson assessment tools. Staff and the district's technology representative, Sandra, explained iPads are more user-friendly for young students and required for certain assessment applications; the board discussed compatibility with existing Chromebooks and the urgency for procurement ahead of an early-February assessment window.
Personnel and staffing criteria: The board ratified the contract of employment for the district's new director of technology, enabling stable leadership in the department. The board also approved HBCSD's professional experience equivalence criteria for teachers of transitional kindergarten (UPK/TK), specifying candidates can meet the district's equivalent experience standard through two years in TK, kindergarten, as a licensed preschool lead teacher, or a combination totaling at least two years.
Votes: For each of these items staff reported that motions were made, seconded and carried by recorded voice vote (ayes). The meeting record shows aye votes across the board for the items presented.
