Adams County expands 'Storm Extreme' truck conversions to cut salt use and operating costs

Adams County highway staff reported progress converting conventional winter maintenance trucks to Storm Extreme units that mix salt brine and rock salt, a change the department says reduces material loss and per-mile costs.
Pat said the retrofit to truck 127 removed the conventional V-box spreader and outfitted the vehicle with a system that carries about 1,700 gallons of salt brine and 8 tons of rock salt; he said the brine/salt mix comes off the truck in a wetter consistency that adheres better to the roadway. The retrofitted truck was deployed on State Highway 82 and staff reported reduced salt usage and lower cost-per-mile on the state highway system where Storm Extreme units are already in service.
Pat said two sections were already converted earlier, the newly converted truck went on the road Tuesday and the chassis for the next unit is at the builder with completion expected next year. He said the conversions are part of the department’s plan to reduce winter maintenance costs and salt consumption.
