Board approves contracts, policy changes and the high-school improvement plan

Business officer Jeremy Peterson explained the athletic trainer contract renewal, noting the trainer’s terms had been revised after parental leave. "She'll officially be under contract… as soon as we sign this," he said. The board moved, seconded and approved the renewal.
The board voted to adopt Rule CKA after reviewing public comments and staff responses. Staff removed language that would have expressly discouraged concealed carry after legal counsel warned the proposed sign language could conflict with state law; staff cited a statutory provision in the meeting. The superintendent said that under the statute "any person that dissuades or does not allow someone to conceal carry who has a legal permit is violating the law," and staff removed the discouraging language from the signage package before adoption. The packet and rule were approved; an audible 'nay' occurred during the vote but the chair stated the motion carried.
The board also approved a Memorandum of Understanding between the district and BOCES that staff said clarifies dates and communication to aid BOCES budgeting. Assistant Superintendent Rigby led negotiations with counsel Adam Phillips and told the board the updated agreement helps set dates and protects district interests.
Separately, the board approved a student disciplinary action discussed in the executive session earlier in the meeting. The motion carried by voice vote; the public transcript records no additional detail about the individual matter.
Finally, after hearing the Evanston High School improvement plan earlier in the meeting, the board moved and approved the plan. The principal had cited improved metrics such as 111 AP exam scores of 3 or higher, 77 college-credit completions and 153 recognized credentials, while noting the district missed growth and equity measures by a narrow margin.
The board announced it would enter executive session as previously added to the agenda and adjourn following that session.
