Planning commission backs abandonment of 0.27-acre right-of-way near fire training site

The Johnson City Regional Planning Commission on Nov. 11 recommended approval of a request to abandon approximately 0.27 acres of right-of-way at 2832 West Walnut Street, a parcel that borders the Johnson City Fire Department training facility.
Riley Putney, development coordinator, said the abandonment is being requested because the land is adjacent to the fire department training facility and that staff recommends approval. Putney said a public utility easement 15 feet wide would be retained through the abandonment survey.
Vice Chairman Dutton moved to recommend approval of the abandonment while retaining the 15-foot public utility easement; the motion was seconded and passed by unanimous roll-call vote. Commissioners Aldridge, Baumgartner, Goodson, Kelly, Williams, Vice Chairman Dutton and Chairman Dagenhart all voted yes.
Staff noted there were no public comments at the hearing and no outstanding concerns about public utilities. The recommendation is advisory; the City Commission will consider the ordinance with the usual three readings.
