Brookhaven honors fire and EMS crews after life‑saving response; ambulance partnership planned

Borough leaders honored Brookhaven Fire Company No. 1 and allied ambulance crews on Nov. 10 for a life‑saving response on Oct. 6, when responders treated a 14‑year‑old who suffered a heart event at home. Chief Montella recounted the call, praised coordinated action by police, fire and EMS, and presented a unit citation recognizing the crews’ lifesaving work.
A family letter read into the record thanked responders and noted hospital capacity issues in the county during the transport. The letter said ambulance crews worked for more than 45 minutes during transport and that ‘‘They saved her life.’’
Chief Montella provided the department’s October statistics — including four building fires, multiple mutual‑aid responses, and 226 ambulance calls in October with 149 transports — and described operational challenges, including a lithium‑ion battery vehicle fire that required a county hazmat response. He also updated council on a partnership to provide an ALS chase vehicle through Rocky Run Fire Company; the borough’s portion of service was estimated at about $150,000 per year and a target in‑service date of Dec. 1.
Council and staff thanked volunteers and mutual‑aid partners and asked residents to heed safety guidance about rechargeable batteries during the holiday season. The borough will place a unit citation plaque at the firehouse and maintain community outreach around EMS and hazard‑mitigation efforts.
