Brookhaven council authorizes grant applications and signs off on sewer repairs and park projects

Brookhaven Borough Council on Nov. 10 voted to pursue multiple grants and to authorize several infrastructure repairs and design steps.
Council authorized resolution language and staff signatures to submit an application for the Local Share Account (gaming revenue) grant program, which provides awards of up to $1 million with no local match. Council discussed possible projects for the application, including exterior improvements at Our Lady of Charity, Memorial Park upgrades and walking‑trail repairs; members warned a million dollars will not stretch far and asked staff to prioritize projects.
The council also approved execution of a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) agreement with the county and authorized design and bidding for Somerville Park work. Borough staff said the CDBG money requires environmental reviews and county execution of the grant agreement before construction can begin — likely not before next spring.
On the sewer side, the council authorized replacement of a failed pump at the borough sewage treatment plant at an estimated cost of $262,680 and the purchase of a $1,800 spare pump. Council also authorized replacement of an erratic influent meter (not to exceed $7,500) and approved design and bidding under a PA small water and sewer grant (≈$391,000) for stream bank stabilization and related work.
All motions on grants and the sewer plant equipment were moved, seconded, and carried by voice vote. Council members said they will return with project scopes and resolutions specifying targeted work for the Local Share Account application.
The council approved several related capital and facilities motions, including authorization to replace a rear curb cut at the municipal complex and flooring replacements (two bids) in Borough Hall.
