District reports HiCap enrollment increase and new plan emphasizing in-school enrichment

District staff presented a multi-part update to the Eatonville School District—s high-cap (HiCap) program, reporting increased enrollment and changes to delivery and family engagement.
HiCap presenter (S4) said the district now serves 98 HiCap students: 44 at the elementary level, 26 at middle school and 28 at high school, an increase of 14 students from last year after recent screenings. The k–3 model moved to weekly pullout enrichment at each home school to avoid busing students to Eatonville Elementary; the district—s HiCap teacher, Mr. Kelson, will travel between campuses and divide his day.
At the middle-school level, staff described cluster placement options (humanities, foreign languages, accelerated math) and a first-period project-based learning enrichment class where HiCap and other students collaborate on projects; an example project involves designing a football cleat with ankle protection and conducting cost analysis on a planned mall field trip. High-school options include college-in-high-school courses, dual enrollment, Running Start and Spokane Virtual classes.
S4 reviewed changes to HiCap plans and assessments, including a redesigned HiCap plan that integrates CogAT screener results into an ability-profile summary for teachers and parents, two student goals per plan and classroom strategies for general-education teachers. Staff also created an online Padlet with teacher resources explaining CogAT scores and enrichment activities and increased parent communication through a monthly HiCap newsletter and planned quarterly parent meetings.
S4 said the state is encouraging districts to consider self-contained grade bands and to develop district-specific norming criteria; staff noted practical challenges for small campuses such as Columbia Crest Academy. The district plans to form a parent advisory committee and update the HiCap plan, which is due in April.
Board members asked clarifying questions and expressed support for parent engagement; no formal policy vote occurred during the meeting.
