The City of Live Oak council voted to rename the historic Live Oak City Hall to honor former council member John W. Huey Sr., following public testimony from residents who described Huey’s long record of civic and military service.
Public commenters urged the council to complete the designation. One resident said the former council member "was and remains the genuine article" and "gets a check mark in all of these categories" for patriotism, service and integrity. Megan Smith, introduced herself as a lifelong Live Oak resident and said Huey’s work "had a tremendously positive impact on this community through faith-based initiatives, public service, leadership, and community engagement."
The council president moved to adopt the naming during the meeting, the motion was seconded, and a roll-call vote followed. The roll call recorded: "Author, yes; Owen, yes; Brown Robinson, no; Jefferson, yes." The chair announced the motion passed.
The council did not attach a specific effective date on the record; the action is recorded as a formal council decision to rename the historic City Hall in honor of John W. Huey Sr. The council proceeded to the next agenda item after the vote.
