Board approves audit report, contracts, donations, lease and new appointment; commencement of litigation tabled

The South Huntington Union Free School District Board approved a series of routine and substantive items at its November meeting, including an internal audit corrective action plan, labor and UPK agreements, data-privacy contracts, donations, a five-year lease and the appointment of a pre-K principal.
Audit and corrective action: The board approved the annual risk assessment report based on the June 2025 internal audit conducted by Naraki Smith. District staff reported five corrective action items in the audit, three of which the district said were complete and two scheduled for implementation by agreed due dates.
Contracts and agreements: The board approved a five-year memorandum of agreement with the South Huntington Power Professionals Association that the presenter said includes average increases of about 2% for power professionals and about 2.35% for teacher assistants over the contract term. The board also approved agreements to place 16 UPK students at The Learning Experience at Huntington and the district’s annual agreement with SCOPE to serve UPK sections; both programs were described as funded through grant dollars.
Data and privacy: The board approved three data-privacy agreements intended to secure students’ personal information and to keep the district compliant with Education Law 2-d.
Facilities and leases: The board approved a new five-year lease with Camp W to operate a summer day camp at Birchwood, with annual lease increments of roughly 10% and an estimated five-year contract value of about $400,000.
Donations and extracurricular support: The district accepted a $1,500 donation from Alex Orthodontics and a $1,000 donation from Elliot Leonardo of Signature Premier Properties to support the Winter Wonderland event. The board also authorized an extra classroom account for the Walt Whitman High School collective recording studio to formalize fundraising and purchases for student projects.
Personnel and appointments: The board approved multiple personnel schedules and announced the appointment of Renee Shum as the first principal of the Silas Wood pre-K center. Shum will remain in her current virtual assistant-principal role through the end of the year while beginning the pre-K transition work; a pre-K program presentation is scheduled for the Dec. 10 meeting.
Tabled litigation: A motion to commence litigation (item 13) was tabled by unanimous vote following executive-session discussions.
Several other routine items — including declaration of obsolete textbooks and technology and a budget transfer exceeding $35,000 to cover door repairs at the Memorial Sixth Grade Center — were approved by the board during the meeting.
