Sunnyvale aquatics staff report rising lessons, rec swim usage and three rescues this year

Aquatics staff presented staffing, programming and safety highlights from the past year. Kelsey Christian, recreation service coordinator (aquatics), said the department ran about 319 lessons this summer (17 more than last year), increased water‑fitness offerings (adding an 8 a.m. deep water fitness class and another weekly aqua yoga), and reported roughly 17,700 participants in aquatics programs in the fiscal year.
Christian said the department employed about 60 seasonal staff during the summer (including 44 lifeguards) and recertified many lifeguards through Red Cross instruction; four staff are lifeguard instructor certified. As part of safety training, staff partnered with the local DPS and ran live, simulated drowning‑response drills involving 911 dispatch scenarios and fire department response.
The presentation noted three active rescues conducted by lifeguards during the rec swim season, which staff highlighted as examples of successful training and emergency action plans in practice. The department continues year‑round recruitment for lifeguards and expects spring to be its major hiring season.
