Birchwood students showcase 'power of yet' and kindness projects at South Huntington board meeting

Shannon Gansey, the Birchwood band director, introduced 10 student musicians who opened the segment with a band selection. Teachers Daniela Bayer and Samantha Martin described classroom and schoolwide activities planned for World Kindness Day, including handmade kindness cards for local coffee shops and small "pocket hugs" distributed to classmates and staff.
Students spoke about simple acts that spread kindness and explained how small behaviors — smiling, helping a friend or saying "thank you" — can build stronger school communities. The presentation concluded with a student-made video meant to encourage viewers to "pay it forward," and Bernadette invited the board and community to applaud the students for their work.
The board president thanked the students, teachers and administrators for the program and noted it will be one of several school presentations the board plans to highlight at future meetings.
