The City Council of Alice on Nov. 12 authorized the Alice Police Department to purchase three Ford Maverick trucks for the Criminal Investigations Division using funds from a Lone Star grant.
Police Chief Edeng Garcia told the council the department was awarded Lone Star funds and proposed buying three Mavericks because they are economical and would allow the department to retire several older vehicles. “They’re 40 miles to the gallon,” Garcia said, citing the trucks’ fuel efficiency. He said the department received buy-board pricing and had a bid of about $30,000 per unit.
Chief Garcia said the department believed roughly $97,000 of the grant was available for vehicles and related equipment; he estimated the three trucks would cost about $90,000 in total, leaving roughly $7,000 for accessories such as toolbox installation and covers. Garcia said he would confirm warranty terms and final equipment costs before purchase.
Council members questioned how the vehicles would be used (the chief said they would be assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and that older Tahoes would be reallocated to patrol and other city uses), and asked whether the remaining grant balance could be spent administratively; staff responded that because the purchase exceeds the city’s administrative threshold it required council authorization. A motion to authorize the purchase was made, seconded, and approved by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will finalize warranty and equipment quotes and complete the purchase under the Lone Star grant authorization.
