City Schools of Decatur staff presented a draft academic calendar for the 2027–28 school year and opened the draft for public feedback. The proposal keeps the district’s long‑standing priorities: 180 instructional days, a full week fall break in September, and a teacher workday (noted for October 12, 2026 in the draft cycle) that responds to teacher advisory council input. The proposed start date is Monday, August 2, and the last day is set for Thursday, May 27, allowing the district to finish before Memorial Day.
Deputy chief of staff Amanda Lynch described the development process: staff used survey results collected from nearly 2,000 respondents in 2023 and nearly 600 in 2024, teacher advisory council guidance, and a desire to align with nearby district calendars where feasible to reduce transportation and scheduling conflicts for staff. The draft maintains fewer early‑release days than in prior years; early releases and semester‑end early dismissals are highlighted in the draft calendar.
The district will publish a survey next week and keep it open through Thanksgiving for additional stakeholder input and will bring a final proposed calendar to the board in December for approval. Staff also said a calendar companion will be developed to identify major religious observances and provide schools with guidance for scheduling events so families and staff can plan.
