Simsbury police chief reports six vacancies, highlights cadet food drive and upcoming community events

At the Nov. 10 meeting, the Simsbury Police chief told the commission the department currently has six officer vacancies and is actively recruiting new hires through Police App.
The chief highlighted recent and upcoming community outreach: a cadet-led food drive at Fitzgerald's Foods collected more than 30 full bags of goods plus $410 in donations for the Simsbury Food Pantry, and the department will assist with the Jack Bannon turkey trot collection Wednesday, Nov. 19. The chief said all donations will be brought to Connecticut Foodshare.
The chief also previewed Simsbury Celebrates, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29, along Route 10 between Plant Hill Road and Drake Hill Road from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with fireworks planned at 8:30 p.m. The department will staff the event with a unified command post, eight sworn members supplemented by patrol.
The chief noted one officer is on modified duty and another is out pending restrictions; he said the department is monitoring staffing and compensation distributions. The commission had no substantive questions about the department's consolidated preliminary budget or year-to-date budget positioning, which the chief said is on target.
Commissioners thanked the cadets and staff for community work.
