Johnson County board OKs $9,885 for downtown courthouse holiday lighting

The Johnson County Convention & Visitors Board voted to approve $9,885.05 to replace holiday lighting strands on the courthouse and improve the downtown holiday display.
"This is a one-time ask," said Danny Causey, director of Discover Downtown Franklin (DDF), explaining that DDF owns the current lights and the request covers 20 new strands to replace cracked, failing strands. Causey said the county commissioners had already contributed $3,000 toward the project and that most ongoing installation costs will be covered by DDF through sponsorships.
Board members asked about durability and feasibility. Causey said the lights are stored in a climate-controlled facility and estimated the new strands would have a multi-year life, adding that the planned installation would leave lights on top of the courthouse rather than extending to the ground.
A motion to approve the $9,885.05 payment was made and seconded; the board voted in favor and the motion passed. After the vote, Causey said the lighting changes will be accompanied by additional downtown seating and event activity planned for later in the year.
The board packet shows DDF previously raised sponsorship funds and contributed to an endowment; Causey described a matching contribution program but did not provide a single consolidated figure during the meeting. The board approved the one-time capital payment and did not alter DDF’s responsibility for future annual installation costs.
