At the Nov. 12 meeting the board received a recap of a recent study session that focused on three items: math curriculum program design, a second reading of a proposed board handbook, and a finalized board self-evaluation.
Director Frank Shaw summarized the session and said the math work will move from evaluation to a program design phase. Shaw said teams of educators with deep content expertise recommended reducing inconsistent curricula across schools and adopting principles such as cognitively guided instruction (CGI) and an emphasis on process over product as the district chooses materials and develops supports.
Shaw said that work will inform selection of curriculum materials during the design phase and will involve additional staff and community engagement. He also reported the board handbook is nearing completion after a year-long process to codify board practices; the handbook is on its second reading and moving toward final adoption.
On the board self-evaluation, Shaw said trustees identified five priority improvement areas and discussed how to integrate them into board goals for the coming year. Board members thanked staff and the study-session participants and indicated the topics will continue into future work sessions.
Next steps: curriculum teams will advance the math program design and bring choices and potential pilot plans back to the board; staff will finalize the handbook and report on implementation steps for the evaluation recommendations.
