A recent case of an unhoused veteran who lost housing over a pet and other immediate needs led the Lowell City Veterans Commission to plan follow-up with local housing providers.
A commissioner described a Marine who became homeless after being removed from veterans housing because of a regular pet (not a service dog). Commissioners asked who in local housing could be contacted; Chair Paul Paradise said he would invite the director of the local group the meeting referred to as the "Bridal Club" to the next meeting to clarify housing eligibility rules and contacts.
Paradise told members the city has an "extremely low" number of unhoused veterans, which he estimated as "under 10." Commissioners noted some veterans are ineligible for programs because of certain discharges or criminal histories, while others decline assistance.
The commission also discussed resource distribution: Eric LaMoche said the VSO runs a small food pantry across the hall and that the Army Corps of Engineers committed to another food drive that will donate to the Lowell veterans office. Separately, Paradise reported that Lowell Police participated in "Coats for Vets" and returned with nearly 40 buckets containing a jacket, gloves and hat for distribution.
Commissioners asked for clearer points of contact for housing cases and for the commission to help connect veterans to services; Paradise suggested having the housing director attend a future meeting and leaving privacy-release forms for the congressional office on hand for referrals.
What’s next: The commission will invite the local housing director to a future meeting, coordinate distribution of donated coats and food, and continue outreach to reduce veteran homelessness in the city.
