RAC approves CWMU and landowner-permit recommendations; Salt Wells CWMU acreage drops substantially

The Central Region Advisory Committee accepted recommendations on Cooperative Wildlife Management Units (CWMU) and landowner permits after staff provided corrections to the presentation.
Darren DeBose, division staff, said staff discovered a significant acreage change for the Salt Wells CWMU: the unit has dropped from 36,417 acres to 7,809 acres, a reduction of roughly 28,000 acres. "They're dropping 28,000 acres from that CWMU," DeBose said, and that change helps explain a drop in pronghorn permit numbers for that CWMU. He also noted that one of the bear CWMUs will drop elk hunting and will continue only deer hunting in the future.
RAC members discussed public‑land adjacency and the renewal process; staff said public‑land reviews and public comment occur in spring, with renewals and buck/bull requests in the fall. Members moved and seconded a motion to accept the CWMU recommendations; the RAC voted unanimously to approve the package.
Division staff said next year will be a large renewal year for CWMU reviews and that they will bring maps and public-comment opportunities to the spring meeting.
