Sergeant Steve Myers, the Alcohol Enforcement Coordinator for the Saint Mary's County Sheriff's Office, told the Alcohol Beverage Board on Nov. 13 that October enforcement work focused on restaurants and a few liquor stores and produced 15 DUI arrests countywide.
Myers said enforcement teams conducted surveillance of businesses on probation and carried out stationary checks at locations of concern; Leonardtown Wine and Spirits and Lex Liquors were inspected and had no recorded violations for the month. "The message is getting out," Myers told the board, adding that training and routine checks are leading to better compliance with ID checks.
Myers said the sheriff’s office counted about 15 DUI arrests for the month and noted the State Police recorded nine more in county enforcement areas, attributing many arrests to officer observations and accident responses. He described enforcement windows roughly between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. and offered age data indicating arrests spanned a broad range, with no concentrated age cohort.
The coordinator flagged that continued proactive patrols and targeted monitoring for major events help deter impaired driving, and he said the office will keep using both criminal and traffic-focused efforts in coordination with regional partners.
