Board reviews school calendars and adopts policy updates; survey on A/B schedule planned

SANDY, UT — At its Nov. 11 meeting the Canyons School District board reviewed proposed school calendars for 2026–27, 2027–28 and 2028–29 and approved a set of personnel and student‑health policy changes.

Steve Dimon, director of human resources, summarized three variances in the draft calendars (a start‑date variance for 2028–29, a kindergarten start‑day adjustment, and four professional‑development days). He recommended a district survey in February to gather parent, teacher and student input on possible A/B schedule changes and semester timing.

Dimon provided attendance context: “Typical day is about 89% attendance. The day before or after is about 1% difference,” he said, noting those small differences are not statistically meaningful but are part of the discussion about professional‑development timing.

Later the board took a single motion to adopt a package of policy updates after a second reading. The adopted changes included updates to employee conduct and professionalism, criminal background‑check procedures (adding FBI checks on hire/rehire and felony‑conviction language for volunteers), alignment with Salt Lake County public‑health practices for employee immunization records, and a new supplemental salary policy for high‑need educators required by state statute (the SHINE program).
