The Carroll County Board of Commissioners adopted a proclamation declaring November as National Youth Homelessness Awareness Month and recognized local Youth Action Board (YAB) efforts on Nov. 13.
Carly Long, continuum of care coordinator in the Department of Citizen Services, thanked the board and described how the YAB has grown over the past year. "Youth experience homelessness in many ways," she said, noting youth may be staying in cars, tents, shelters or with friends and family and may be unaccompanied by guardians. The YAB attended national summits and has coordinated a drive collecting hygiene items and winter coats; organizers said more than 40 boxes of items were collected last year and they hope to expand in the current drive.
Milo, the YAB president, described the day‑to‑day challenges that homeless youth face in winter months and urged support for the drive that will distribute collected items across school and community partners.
The board thanked presenters and encouraged residents to donate at local collection sites and to meet YAB members at the Miracle on Main Street event on Nov. 29.
