The board approved a memorandum of understanding with M STEP (presented as Winstep) to provide one-on-one support to at-risk students, funded by an M STEP grant that pays district staff for additional time; program participation requires school-staff identification and parental permission.
The Kingman Unified School District board voted Nov. 13 to approve a memorandum of understanding with M STEP (referred to in presentation as Winstep) that will provide one-on-one support to students identified as at risk.
District staff explained that M STEP is a nonprofit that addresses opioid use and that the program uses volunteer M STEP representatives at each school who work directly with school counselors or classroom teachers to identify students in need. Staff said parental permission is required for two-way communications and for the one-on-one support model.
According to presenters, grant funding from M STEP pays district employees for the additional hours required to provide the one-on-one support. The MOU, which began as a pilot last year, proposes identifying a minimum of 12 eligible students (approximately one student per campus) consistent with available M STEP funding. A representative from M STEP, Michelle, and district staff were present to answer trustee questions.
Trustees asked how students are identified and were told staff referrals, counselor recommendations and observed indicators can trigger consideration; staff emphasized family involvement through required parental permission. The board approved the MOU by voice vote.
