Newark proclaims November Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month; students, community leaders mark occasion

The Newark City Council on Nov. 13 presented a proclamation recognizing November as Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month and invited local Sikh community members and students to the podium for remarks.
Mayor (speaker 1) recited the proclamation citing Sikh contributions to agriculture, the armed forces and technology and noted the community’s long history in the United States. He presented "proclamation number 19 59" and invited Terence (Taran) Singh (speaker 3) forward. "Whereas Sikh Americans pursue diverse professions and make rich contributions to the social, cultural, and economic vibrancy of The United States," the proclamation stated.
Students and local leaders followed. Nalini Gaur, a freshman at Newark Memorial High School and vice president of the Newark Sikh Student Association, described Sikh contributions to civil‑rights struggles and community service, citing historical examples and local volunteer work. Other speakers recounted Sikh community relief work during the pandemic, mass vaccination drives and ongoing neighborhood service. Terence Singh thanked the council and staff for the recognition. "I appreciate it," he said after receiving the proclamation.
The council concluded the recognition with a group photo and brief remarks about the importance of cultural diversity and mutual understanding.
