Margaret Lyons, a member of the mayor’s End Childhood Hunger committee, presented a proposal Nov. 13 asking the Beauregard Parish School Board to consider a districtwide ‘‘snack and readiness coordinator’’ position at each school to identify and assist students experiencing food insecurity.
Lyons said the coordinator could be an administrator, a designated staff member, or a PTO/parent volunteer whose responsibilities would include discreetly recognizing students in need, coordinating snacks and meals with community partners and local donors, and ensuring distributions preserve students’ privacy and dignity. “The title snack and readiness coordinator is more than a label. It’s a mission,” Lyons said.
Lyons framed the proposal as a way to bring structure to informal supports already in place, including pantries at schools such as DeRidder High School. She emphasized community partnerships and asked the board to consider the committee’s recommendation.
Board members thanked Lyons for the presentation; no formal motion or vote on the proposal was recorded in the transcript. The presentation was received as information and the board did not adopt or commit specific funding during the meeting.
